Interior & Exterior Painting: Should You DIY or Hire a Pro?

I get asked this question a lot. Someone in Arroyo Grande will stop by the shop or call and say, "Willy, I'm thinking about painting my living room" or "My deck's looking rough — should I just do it myself?"

Honestly, the answer depends on the scope, the conditions, and how picky you are about the finish. I've been handling painting jobs on the Central Coast for years now, and I've seen plenty of DIY work that turned out great — and plenty that needed a full redo. Let me walk you through what makes sense to tackle yourself and what you really should leave to someone who does this every week.

What You Can Realistically DIY

If you've got a single bedroom or a bathroom that needs interior paint, you can absolutely do it. Interior work in controlled conditions — no wind, no temperature swings, no salt air eating into your finish — is forgiving.

Interior walls in good condition are your easiest play. If the drywall is smooth, there are no water stains, and you're not covering a dark color with a light one, you're looking at a straightforward project. Grab some painter's tape, a roller frame, extension poles, and quality brushes. The prep takes longer than the painting. Most people rush it and it shows — take time to tape off the trim, lay out drop cloths, and fill any dings with spackling compound.

You'll want to spend decent time on prep. Sand any rough spots, patch holes, wipe down dust. If you skip this, the paint won't stick as well and you'll have bumps and inconsistencies.

Cabinets and trim are another story if you've done small projects before. But I'll say this — they're tedious and the finish quality depends on technique. If you want something that looks *really* clean, not just "okay," it's trickier than it sounds.

Where DIY Gets Risky

External painting on the Central Coast? That's where things get complicated fast.

Our salt air, the marine layer moisture, and the dry summers create conditions that are rough on paint jobs. Weather windows. This is July — we're in the dry season, which is actually the best time for exterior work. But you need consecutive days without fog rolling in during morning and evening paint time. I plan exterior jobs around marine layer patterns because I know what'll trap moisture and ruin the cure.

Proper technique on vertical surfaces. Brush marks, lap lines, uneven coverage — these show on siding and trim way more than they do on walls. Getting a uniform finish requires knowing how to feather the edges and work section to section without visible lines.

Height and equipment. If you need a ladder, extension poles, or scaffolding, suddenly the physics and safety change. I've got the equipment and the insurance. You probably don't.

The Real Consequences of Shortcuts

Last month I had a customer in Arroyo Grande who'd tried to paint their back deck rails themselves the year before. They didn't sand the existing finish, just slapped new stain over it.
