Deck Building & Repair: What You Can DIY vs. When to Call a Pro

Spring is deck season on the Central Coast. Some repairs you can handle yourself—but some mistakes will haunt you for years. Here's what I tell homeowners in Nipomo about doing it right.

Deck Building & Repair: What You Can DIY vs. When to Call a Pro

It's May, the marine layer is starting to lift, and half the homeowners in Nipomo are out looking at their decks for the first time since winter. Smart move. That's when you spot the real damage—boards that have warped, railings that are getting wobbly, bolts that have corroded in our salty Central Coast air.

I get asked a lot: "Willy, can I just fix this myself?" The honest answer is: some of it, yeah. But not all of it. And I've watched enough DIY deck repairs go sideways that I want to give you a straight breakdown of what's doable and what'll come back to bite you.

What You Can Handle Yourself

If you've got basic tools and patience, a few deck projects are genuinely in the DIY wheelhouse.

Staining and sealing. This one's yours. Power wash the deck (be gentle—you can gouge the wood if you're not careful), let it dry a few days, and apply a quality exterior stain. On the Central Coast, the salt air will eat an unprotected deck alive, so this maintenance step is real. I recommend a semi-transparent stain over solid color—it shows wood grain and lets you see when it's time to recoat again, usually every 2–3 years up here. Take your time, follow the product instructions, and you'll feel good about it.

Replacing individual deck boards. If one board has rotted or is cracked beyond repair, you can pull it and bolt in a new one—but only if the joists underneath are sound. This requires a circular saw, a level, and the ability to sink 3/8-inch bolts. Not hard, but you have to measure twice. I had a customer in the Southwood neighborhood pull a board, realize the joist was also soft, and suddenly they were in over their head. Keep an eye on what you find as you work.

Tightening bolts and hardware. Loose railings? Bolts backing out? Grab a socket wrench and go through the deck every spring. That's maintenance, and it matters. Stainless or galvanized hardware only—plain steel will rust in six months in our salt-influenced air.

Where DIY Gets Dangerous

This is where I need to be direct with you.

Structural repairs and joist replacement. If you're finding soft wood, rot, or insect damage in the joists, framing, or ledger board, stop. This is load-bearing structure. I've seen decks where someone tried to patch a rotted joist with a sister board and didn't account for the proper fastening pattern. Two years later, the whole section is sagging. A deck that fails doesn't just look bad—it can hurt someone. If you don't know how to assess wood rot, calculate load capacity, or understand SLO County building code for deck fastening, this isn't a DIY project.

Willy's been the guy fixing these in Nipomo for years, and structural issues are the fastest way to turn a small repair into a major rebuild.

Ledger board work. This is the most critical connection on your deck—where it bolts to your house. If water gets behind the ledger, you're looking at foundation damage. I've pulled decks in Nipomo where the ledger wasn't flashed correctly, and the house rim joist had started to rot. That turns into thousands of dollars more work than a proper install would have cost. This needs someone who understands local codes and has done it right before.

Building from scratch. You can YouTube a deck build, but here's the thing: footings need to be 3 feet deep in SLO County soil (we hit different soil types depending on where you are—clay around Nipomo holds water differently than the sandier stuff closer to the coast). If your footings are shallow, frost heave in winter will move your posts. Railings have specific code requirements about spacing and strength. I'd rather see you hire a pro for this than have a beautiful new deck that fails inspection or worse.

When You Really Need a Professional

Call someone (and that someone can be me) if:

  • You're finding soft wood, discoloration, or water damage anywhere in the structure.
  • The deck is more than 10 years old and you haven't had it properly inspected.
  • You need to pull the deck away from the house or replace the ledger.
  • Railings or stairs feel unstable.
  • You're building new and want it done right the first time.
  • You live on the coast or near the dunes and your deck takes a salt-air beating—materials and fastening matter more out here.
  • The truth is, a professional catches things you won't see. Last year I was out in Nipomo doing a repair, and the homeowner had already replaced a section of rim joist themselves. They'd used the right material, but they'd missed that the bolt pattern was off by half an inch, which meant shear loads weren't distributed right. Looked fine. Would've failed in a few years under real stress. Small mistakes add up.

Why Willy Matters for Spring Deck Work

Right now, in May, is the perfect time to assess your deck before summer entertaining season. I can walk your deck in an hour, tell you what needs attention, and give you a straight answer about what's DIY and what needs professional work. I've got the moisture meter, the probe that tells me if wood is sound, and 15 years of Central Coast deck experience.

I'll also know what permits you need if you're doing major work—SLO County has specific requirements depending on the size and location of your project, and the last thing you want is to finish a new deck only to be told you need to tear it out because it wasn't permitted.

Some of my best customers are the ones who did what they could themselves, spotted the part that needed help, and called me in. That's smart. It's the ones who push past their skill level that end up with a headache they didn't expect.
