# How to Build & Repair a Deck in Morro Bay: Step-by-Step
I've been building and fixing decks in Morro Bay for years. Every single one is different — some are salt-air casualties hanging on by a thread, others are brand-new projects that need to be built right from the start. Either way, the fundamentals stay the same.
This guide walks you through what happens when you call someone like me to handle your deck, and what you need to know if you're thinking about tackling part of the work yourself. I'm not here to talk you out of hiring a pro — I'm here to explain how it actually works.
Step 1: Assessment & Planning
Before a single board goes down, we need to understand what we're working with.
If you're repairing an existing deck, I start by walking the whole thing. I'm checking for soft spots — that's your first red flag that rot has moved in. I'll press my pocket knife into joists, ledger boards, and support posts. If it sinks in more than an eighth of an inch, that wood is compromised. I've pulled up decks in Morro Bay where the salt air and marine layer humidity have absolutely destroyed the underside of pressure-treated lumber that looked fine from above.
For new builds, it's about understanding your site. Are you building on clay or sandy soil? Morro Bay's got mostly clay, which means water sits around footings. That changes how deep you go and what you do about drainage. Do you have ocean views that mean salt spray hits your deck year-round? That changes your material choice completely.
This is also when you figure out permits. San Luis Obispo County requires permits for most deck work. I always pull them — it protects you and me both. The inspector's going to check frost line depth (36 inches in our area), post spacing, and ledger board attachment. You can't skip that.
Step 2: Choose Your Materials
This is where a lot of people get tripped up, and honestly, it matters more on the Central Coast than anywhere else.
Pressure-treated lumber is the standard for structural work — joists, beams, posts. It'll hold up better than untreated wood, but in Morro Bay's salt-air environment, you're still looking at degradation over time if you don't maintain it. I always recommend stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners, never plain galvanized. The salt air eats through regular galv in a couple seasons.
For decking boards themselves, you've got options. Pressure-treated works but needs regular staining. Composite materials (wood-plastic blends) don't rot and hold up well to coastal conditions, though they're less forgiving if you mess up the installation. Cedar or redwood looks beautiful but rots faster here unless you're vigilant about staining every couple years. Tropical hardwoods like Ipe are built to last decades — they're dense, they don't splinter, and the salt air barely touches them.
Willy's honest take: Pick what you can actually maintain. I've seen too many homeowners choose the cheapest option and then ignore it for five years while it falls apart.
Step 3: Foundation & Footings
This is where decks fail. Ninety percent of the time, it's the foundation that betrays you.
Every post needs to sit on a footing that goes below the frost line. In San Luis Obispo County, that's 36 inches minimum. You're digging down to solid ground, not just tamping down soil. You pour concrete — usually a 50-pound bag of QUIKRETE per hole — and set your post base on it. I always use an adjustable post base that sits on top of the concrete, not embedded in it. Keeps the wooden post elevated so water doesn't pool and start rot.
Ledger board attachment is critical and this is where I see the most mistakes. Your ledger is bolted to your house's band board or rim joist, not to your house wrap or siding. You remove that first. Use 1/2-inch galvanized bolts, 16 inches apart, with washers under the nuts. If you don't do this right, water gets behind the ledger, runs down your house's foundation, and you've got bigger problems than a weak deck.
I had a customer on Main Street in Morro Bay whose deck had pulled away from the house about a quarter-inch. That gap was letting rain straight into her band board. We had to pull the whole ledger, replace about 6 feet of rotted rim joist, and reattach everything with proper flashing and bolts. That was a bigger job than it needed to be.
Step 4: Joists, Beams & Spacing
Structural integrity comes down to spacing and attachment.
Joists typically run 16 inches on center for residential decks, sometimes 12 inches if you're using thinner boards or have a longer span. Beams support the joists and sit on the posts. You're using bolts or lag screws here, not nails. Nails will back out over time, especially in a structure that moves slightly with temperature and moisture changes.
I always double-check my work with a level. Decks need a slight slope — about 1/8 inch per foot — so water runs off instead of pooling. On the coast, standing water is your enemy. It breeds mold, accelerates rot, and gives you a slippery surface when the marine layer rolls in.
Step 5: Decking Installation & Spacing
Once your frame is solid, decking goes down.
Leave a small gap between boards — about the thickness of a coin — so water can drain and the boards can move with humidity changes. Composite materials sometimes need wider gaps depending on the product. Use corrosion-resistant screws, 16-gauge stainless or equivalent. Two screws per board into each joist. Screws won't back out like nails do, and stainless won't rust and stain your deck.
Stagger the end joints so you're not creating weak points. Run your boards perpendicular to your joists — that's load-bearing. Some people like to run them at angles for aesthetics, and that's fine, but understand you're probably reducing the deck's strength slightly.
Step 6: Maintenance & Repairs
Your deck isn't done when the last board is down. It's just getting started.
On the Central Coast, you should inspect your deck twice a year — spring and after the dry season ends. Look for soft spots, loose fasteners, cracks in the wood, and anything green or black (mold, mildew, algae). Pressure-treated lumber should be stained every 2–3 years. Composite decks need less work but still benefit from occasional cleaning.
If you find rotted boards, replace them now. One bad board can lead to water intrusion in the joists beneath. I've had customers put off fixing a single bad decking board for a season and ended up needing joist replacement. Way more involved than just pulling one board and screwing down a new one.
Fasteners loosen over time. I'll spend 15 minutes with a drill every couple years tightening things up. Catches problems before they cascade.

Building a deck that'll stand up to Morro Bay's salt air and our wet winters requires attention to detail and the right materials. If you're doing this yourself, don't rush the footings and ledger board work — that's where your investment either thrives or fails.
