Custom carpentry isn't magic, but it does require planning. Over the years, I've built everything from kitchen islands and built-in shelving to deck railings and custom closet systems across Grover Beach and the Central Coast. The difference between a project that lasts 20 years and one that falls apart in five comes down to how carefully you approach it from day one.

Here's how the process actually works.

Step 1: Define What You Need (and What You Don't)

Before I ever reach for a pencil, I sit down with the homeowner and ask hard questions. What's the space for? How will it be used? Are kids going to jump on it? Will it sit in the salt air—and if so, how close are you to the dunes? That last question matters more than most people realize.

Last fall, I had a customer in Grover Beach who wanted a built-in window seat with storage. Turns out, the window faces the ocean and gets morning marine-layer moisture. That changed *everything* about wood selection and finish. If we'd skipped this conversation, we'd have swollen wood and failed joints by now.

Be honest about the real conditions. Grover Beach sits close enough to the Pacific that salt-air corrosion affects hardware, and the humidity cycles through here differently than inland San Luis Obispo. That's not a problem—I just need to know it.

  • Step 2: Choose Your Materials (This Determines Everything)

    This is where the real work starts. The wood I choose for a kitchen island is completely different from what I'd use for a covered deck railing in Grover Beach.

    For indoor work, I typically work with hardwoods like red oak, maple, or walnut—species that take stain beautifully and hold detail. For anything exposed to the elements, I lean toward cedar, redwood, or composite materials. The Central Coast's dry summers are forgiving compared to humid climates, but winter moisture still creeps in.

    I also think about hardware early. For coastal projects, I use 316-grade stainless steel fasteners, not galvanized. Galvanized corrodes faster out here. The hinges, handles, and brackets all matter.

    Key Material Decisions

    Stain vs. paint: Paint hides grain but is forgiving if grain is inconsistent. Stain shows character but demands better wood. Coastal air prefers matte finishes; they show salt residue less.

    Hardware: This isn't where to economize. Good hardware stays smooth and reliable. Poor hardware seizes and corrodes.

    Step 3: Design and Layout

    I sketch things out—sometimes on paper, sometimes in CAD—but always with exact measurements. I measure twice, sometimes three times. The old saying holds: measure twice, cut once.

    For built-in shelving, I account for settling and uneven walls (Grover Beach homes can shift on our clay soil). I'll run a level through the entire space and plan how to hide the corrections. You won't see it, but I'll know it's there.

    I also think about wood movement. If I'm building a cabinet that's 3 feet wide, solid-wood sides will expand and contract seasonally. I plan for that using traditional joinery or modern pocket holes, depending on the style.

    This is the moment to get on the same page about details: visible fasteners or hidden? Stained interior or painted? Adjustable shelves or fixed? These decisions change how I build.

    Step 4: Mill and Prepare Your Materials

    If I'm using rough-cut lumber, I plane it to thickness, square it up, and sand it smooth. This takes time. A single piece of 1x12 cedar can take 20 minutes to mill properly.

    I cut all the pieces slightly oversized, then fit them during assembly. This is the carpenter's approach—not cabinet-shop perfection off the table saw, but thoughtful, careful work that accounts for wood movement and real-world installation.

    Step 5: Build the Structure

    Most of the work happens here. I use mortise-and-tenon joinery for heirloom pieces, pocket-hole joinery for modern casework, and traditional frame-and-panel construction for larger projects. The method depends on the style and how long it needs to last.

    I sand progressively: 80-grit to remove milling marks, 120-grit to smooth, 150-grit for the final finish. That progression matters. Jump from 80 to 220, and you'll see scratches in the final stain.

    Quality woodwork isn't rushed. A week to build something that'll sit in your home for 20 years feels reasonable to me.

    Step 6: Finishing

    This is where amateur work shows. I apply stain or paint in the right humidity and temperature (ideally 50–70°F, not the blazing dry heat we get in August). Willy doesn't finish on a 95-degree day when the wood's been sitting in the sun.

    For most work, I'll seal with a water-based or oil-based polyurethane. For pieces near the coast, I add a UV-inhibitor to the finish to slow fading.

    Step 7: Installation

    I install carefully, using shims to ensure everything's level and plumb, even if the house isn't. Fasteners are always hidden when possible—pocket holes, figure-8 fasteners, or traditional concealment.

    For anything that takes weight or gets regular use, I secure it to the framing—not just drywall. That's non-negotiable.

    What Homeowners Often Miss

    Most people think custom carpentry is about the final look. It's not. It's about how it performs for the next decade. That means choosing materials and construction methods that handle the actual conditions your home sits in—the marine layer, the salt air, the humidity swings, the foot traffic.
